Saar Crane in Saarbrücken

Beschreibung

Kurzbeschreibung:

the wooden crane flanking the Wilhelm Heinrich Bridge is a reconstruction of the historic Saar Crane (Alter Saarkran), built in 1761/62 according to plans by and under the supervision of the architect Friedrich-Joachim Stengel. From 1762 to 1865, the crane was used to load and unload ships. However, with the emergence of railway transport and the construction of a new port facility, little by little, the crane became less important. It decayed and disappeared from the city scape, almost unnoticed. During the construction of the urban motorway, the crane´s original foundations were unearthed and, financed by donations, the technical monument was finally reconstructed in 1989/90 in accordance with the original building plans
